お墓をマリーゴールドの花でにぎやかに飾り付け、こっちに帰っ
て来る大好きな死者を喜ばせるために、街ではパレードや仮装行
列が盛大に行われます。
DIA DE MUERTOS / DAY OF THE DEAD/ガイコツ祭、死者祭
とも言われます。

メキシコでは、死は消えてなくなるものではなく、生へと繋ぐもの、
再生を意味し、いつか必ず訪れる死を、笑顔で迎えられるように、
毎日を大切に楽しく生きていく、そんな思いも込められているそうです。
また、ガイコツには自由を意味するという説もあるそうです。
スペインの植民地だった事もあり、ガイコツになれば生前縛られて
いた人種や民族、肌の色が関係なくなるという理由だそうです。

サボテンの上で蛇を咥える鷲
メキシコの国章(メキシコのこくしょう)アステカの伝説に由来する
デザイン。
サボテンに立つ蛇を咥えた鷲は、アステカの民が首都を決めるために、
ウィツィロポチトリ神の神託により「サボテンの上に蛇を食らう鷲が
いる土地」を探して200年の間彷徨った伝説。
アステカの民はテクシココ湖で神託に適う土地を発見し、
テノチティトラン(現在のメキシコシティ)を建設した。
