お墓をマリーゴールドの花でにぎやかに飾り付け、この季節に
我が故郷へ帰って来る大好きな死者(先祖の霊)を喜ばせるために、
街ではパレードや仮装行列が盛大に行われます。
DIA DE MUERTOS / DAY OF THE DEAD/ガイコツ祭、死者祭
とも言われます。

メキシコでは、死は消えてなくなるものではなく、生へと繋ぐもの、
再生を意味し、いつか必ず訪れる死を、笑顔で迎えられるように、
毎日を大切に楽しく生きていく、そんな思いも込められているそうです。

また、ガイコツには自由を意味するという説もあるそうです。
スペインの植民地だった事もあり、ガイコツになれば生前縛られて
いた人種や民族、肌の色が関係なくなるという理由だそうです。
