メキシコでは、死は消えてなくなるものではなく、生へと
繋ぐもの、再生を意味し、いつか必ず訪れる死を、笑顔で
迎えられるように、毎日を大切に楽しく生きていく、そん
な思いも込められているそうです。

また、ガイコツには自由を意味するという説もあるそうで
す。スペインの植民地だった事もあり、ガイコツになれば
生前縛られていた人種や民族、肌の色が関係なくなるとい
う理由だそうです。

ラテンアメリカ諸国における祝日の一つ。
特にメキシコにおいて盛大な祝祭が行われる。
アメリカやカナダ等に在住する同地域出身者の間でも同様
の習慣が継続されている。
