メキシコの画家「ディエゴ・リベラ」は、
壁画 「アラメダ公園の日曜午後の夢」
CATRINA/カトリーナ(貴婦人)とは、 CATRIN/カトリン(伊達男)
からきた造語。
カトリーナと呼ばれるこの骸骨は、 死者の日には様々な形で必ず参加
しているが、 その基となっているのは、1910年にメキシコの 風刺画家
ポサダによって描かれた、 calavera garbancera (ヒヨコマメ売りの頭骸骨) 。
骨だけの頭にフランス風の羽飾りのついた 帽子をかぶっているその姿は、
自らの境遇とはあまりにかけ離れた、 華やかなヨーロッパ文化に憧れる
メキシコ人への、強烈な風刺だった様です。 その後ディエゴ・リベラは、
壁画 「アラメダ公園の日曜午後の夢」 の中にその骸骨を描いて、 これを
カトリーナと名づけた様です。
壁画の中のカトリーナは全身像で、 貴婦人のように着飾ってポサダの横
に立っています。

What is CATRINA (lady)? CATRIN (date man)

This skeleton, called Katrina, always participates in various forms on the Day of the Dead.
However, it is based on the calavera garbancera (skeleton of a chickpea seller), drawn by the Mexican caricaturist Posada in 1910.
The image of him wearing a French-style feathered hat on his bare head seems to have been a strong satire on Mexicans who admired the glamorous European culture that was so far removed from their own circumstances. Diego Rivera later depicted the skeleton in his mural ``A Sunday Afternoon Dream in Alameda Park'' and apparently named it Catrina.
In the mural, Katrina is a full-length statue, dressed like a lady and standing next to a posada.
