ウロボロス (ouroboros, uroboros)
は、古代の象徴の1つで、己の尾を
噛んで環となったヘビもしくは竜を
図案化したものです。

ヘビは、脱皮して大きく成長するさ
まや、長期の飢餓状態にも耐える強
い生命力などから、「死と再生」
「不老不死」などの象徴とされる。

そのヘビがみずからの尾を食べるこ
とで、始まりも終わりも無い完全な
ものとしての象徴的意味が備わって
いるそうです。

(メキシコでのアートや民芸品で作られた頭蓋骨の呼び方)
メキシコでは、死は消えてなくなるものではなく、生へと繋ぐもの、
再生を意味し、いつか必ず訪れる死を、笑顔で迎えられるように、
毎日を大切に楽しく生きていく、そんな思いも込められているそうです。

また、ガイコツには自由を意味するという説もあるそうです。
スペインの植民地だった事もあり、ガイコツになれば生前縛られて
いた人種や民族、肌の色が関係なくなるという理由だそうです。
