魔除けとしての蹄鉄

扉に蹄鉄をぶら下げると魔除けになると信じられている文化
圏があり、多くの国では幸運のお守りとも見なされている。
一般的な迷信として蹄鉄の鉄尾(末端部分)が扉に留められてい
れば、幸運が舞い込むというものがある。しかし、両端が下に
向いていると不運が舞い込むともいう。ここら辺りは文化圏に
よって異なり、2つの鉄尾が下を向いていれば幸運が舞い込む
というものもある。
むろん、蹄鉄が普及しなかった国ではこういった風習は見ら
れない。
ただし、日本でも自動車のフロントグリルに蹄鉄を模したアク
セサリーを付けることが流行った時期がある。さらにそれは、
馬は人間を踏まないということから、交通安全のお守りとして
蹄鉄を自動車に付けたという説がある。

蹄鉄による幸運も悪運も、それを掛けた人ではなく、その所有
者に降りかかると信じられている地域もある。従って盗んだり、
借りたりした蹄鉄からはどんな幸運も得ることは出来ないとい
われている。ある地域では蹄鉄は人目に付くように留められて
おかないと何の効果もないといわれている。

このような風習の起源は諸説ある。ケルト人がダーナ神族を鉄
器と騎馬で打ち倒した事から、邪鬼などの異界の住人は鉄を嫌
うという伝承が起こり、本来の民話や伝説が持つ意味は忘れ去
られ、ただ幸運をもたらすという風習だけが残ったという説。
後にカンタベリー大司教となった鍛冶屋の聖ダンステンが 悪魔
から馬の蹄鉄を修理するよう頼まれた際、悪魔の足に蹄鉄を打
ち付け、痛がる悪魔に、扉に蹄鉄が留められているときは絶対
中に入らないという約束を取り付けようやく蹄鉄を取り外して
やったことから悪魔除けとされた説。
女性器の象徴を家の外壁に飾ることで悪魔の目をそらせ家への
侵入を防ぐという風習が古くからあり、馬蹄が女性器を象徴し
たためこの悪魔除けの力が幸運のシンボルとなったという説。
蹄鉄に打つ鋲の数が7(ラッキーセブン)だったためという説な
どがある。
