の大形多年草。メキシコ原産。
メスカル/テキーラの原材料。
メスカルはテキーラと同じく、多肉植物である
アガベを原料に造られるメキシコ産の蒸留酒。
メスカルは「テキーラの母」と呼ばれています。
テキーラは規定で原料に使用できるアガベの
品種はブルーアガベ種のみですが、メスカルでは
現状で52品種のアガベが使用できます。

のアガウエーから名付けたもので、メキシコでは
マゲイ(西: maguey)とも呼ばれている。
英名は、century　plants(センチュリープランツ)」。
まるで「百年に一度」しか開花しないかのような生態
であることから、こうなったと思われます。
実際には数十年に一度開花します。
開花すると、親株は枯死して世代交代します。
花言葉は「繊細」「気高い貴婦人」
